It was a truly magical way to see the Amazon from a very comfortable base. The accommodations are top-notch and very comfortable, contrary to the setting in which they are inserted, which is quite uncomfortable given the humidity and relentless heat.

According to a local joke, the Amazon has two seasons: winter and hell. Winter is the rainy season, which normally starts around November, and goes through June or July. The rest of the year is drier - and even hotter. We were there in December, which was just the beginning of the rainy season, and the rivers were quite low. We did get rain, but it was intermittent on most days, and very manageable. Temperatures were 80s and low 90s, with high humidity throughout.

The stay is organized such that you have two sightseeing outings throughout the day punctuated by delicious meals, and some much-needed downtime in the air conditioning. One of our kids described it as “summer camp for adults.“ The programming throughout the day is quite rigid in terms of the schedule. You have to wake up early, have a quick breakfast, and be ready for your first outing at 8:30 AM. Each outing lasts for about two hours. You then have some rest time before lunch, and an afternoon outing at 3 PM. Then more downtime until dinner in the early evening.

The activities are very well organized with great local guides who know a lot about the fauna and flora of the region. We did two jungle walks in different areas, a couple of boat trips (one in the morning and one at night), a visit to a local village, and a canoe ride. They were all interesting. The landscape itself is uniform throughout, with trees and water pretty much everywhere you look. In the Rio Negro there aren’t that many birds because of the acidity of the water, but you do see a few. In the jungle, you don’t see a lot of animals because it is so vast and the animals will hide from humans. We did see snakes and one sloth on a tree, as well as a couple of alligators and river dolphins in the water. Lots of ants, termite, and spiders. If you’re interested in animals, you will see a lot more in the Brazilian Pantanal.

The food was delicious and very varied, with plenty of local flavors. Drinks are only included in the breakfast meal. All other alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks for lunch and dinner are paid separately. Filtered water is available free of charge anytime, and they give you metal water bottles to carry with you. They have an odd system where they assign a specific table at the restaurant to each room in the hotel. If you don’t like your table, you need to negotiate with them for a move.

Our accommodations were excellent in their two bedroom villa. The rooms are very spacious, and the bathrooms have an outdoor wet area for a shower and bathtub. We also had a screened in area with couches and a hammock, as well as a pool with a deck. Very luxurious. There are also two other pools in the property facing the river, one for families, and one for adults only. Like most pools in Brazil, they are not heated. The river is warmer and also very pleasant for swimming.

Transportation from Manaus to the jungle is included both ways. The schedules are also quite fixed. The vans are comfortable, but the road is very bumpy, which means guaranteed motion sickness if you have a sensitive stomach and are sitting in the back. We later learned that there is a possibility for a hydroplane transfer, but it is pricey (Real $10000 each way for up to 8 people) and organized separately.

While it is true that there are a lot fewer mosquitoes in the Rio Negro area and the Anavilhanas Lodge compared to other Amazon areas, it is not true that there are no mosquitoes. You will still need plenty of bug spray always and long pants and ideally a light long sleeve shirt for your jungle outings.

Everyone in the hotel was very nice and English is widely spoken. Most of the guests are foreign tourists. Anavilhanas does Brazil proud as a great base from which to explore the magic of the Amazon.
This is honestly a truly magical place. We opted for the cottage and to be honest, I am glad we did as it was absolutely stunning and you hardly spend any time in it!
My son and I stayed at the lodge in late September. It’s a beautiful peaceful place with well organised trips hiking in the jungle, learning about the natural world & seeing the pink dolphins (we did!), amazing local food & an international menu, staff and guides were such great hosts. Also recommend the massage.
The bungalows are luxurious, there is free filtered water & a green sustainable ethos such as solar power and a connection back to community and hiring local staff.
We particularly enjoyed our regional boat trip and our 4 hour hike 50 kms away from the lodge. The swimming pools were a welcome relief as the heat was pretty intense and seeing is believing! Shop is definitely worth purchasing from with local crafts Definitely recommend if you want a unique luxurious experience in the jungle and would return to do it all again.
The venue is beautiful with DELICIOUS food (which I didn't expect). The tours set up by this company are amazing, each full of experiences that focus on different aspects of the Amazon. Overall, my wife and I loved every second of it. Saw lots of pink dolphin! Unfortunately we didn't know that we couldn't fish for Piranha's during their "dry season", so we'll definitely be going back again right after their rainy season ends because it sounds like there's a whole different set of potential activities then!
We booked a short trip and in hindsight I wish we did more days.

The food was one of the highlights - you must try the amazonian fish - pirarucu, tambaqui and filhote. We also tried cupuaçu and açaí. Every single meal we had was delicious. We also loved the drinks - my only recommendation would be to offer Prosecco by the glass.

We originally tried to reserve the panoramic room however it wasn’t available so we did the smallest - the cottage room. It was still very cozy and clean.
Every aspect of our journey into the Amazon was wonderful and the lodge ensured our holiday was perfect. The guides were terrific patiently educating and explaining the best of the Amazon , it’s ecosystem, wildlife and more. The food at the lodge was excellent as was the service. The rooms are well appointed and comfortable. We felt fortunate to have this experience.
The lodge is superb giving us great experiences during the stay.

First of all it is wonderfully laid out and tastefully decorated. We stayed in a Bungalow and loved it including the walk to it. The Deck by the river and the main reception area is where we spent a lot of time. The Deck is just brilliant to spend time by the river.

The service is friendly, not over bearing. The guides are the best - Roberion and Gabriel were brilliant. Reneta, who captained the boats was great too. We saw a wide variety of wild life : Boa constrictor, Caiman, various spiders including tarantula, birds including Macau, owls, nighthawks, white hawks, parrots etc., the three toed sloths, Opossums, grey and pink dolphins - the boa being the highlight. We fished Pirhanas and the odd Tilapia. We love their focus on Conscious Tourism and seeing animals in their natural habitat. The tours were great - the nocturnal one being the highlight. The activities are well spaced out and gives you enough time for personal things.

Food is good - I would not say exceptional or fine dining. The focus on local foods is excellent. There is wide variety of choice and they make every effort to satisfy your gastronomical tastes. The restaurant is well laid out with your own tables - there is no forced mixing. The service is excellent.

The rooms are spacious and cleaning is of very high standard. We never met the house keeping staff but they were brilliant.

We took the sea plane to arrive and it was a great choice. It is strongly recommended including the fly over the Meeting of the Waters. We returned by their vehicle and it was very comfortable and took 3 hours to their property in Manaus - where stayed one night. Villa Amazonia is a great place to stay and the location cannot get better in Manaus.

Our check in was a bit rushed. Another 10 minutes of explanations would have been better as we took a bit of time to figure things out.

Overall a great stay. Language is not a barrier. While Portugese is the spoken language, English is well understood.
We had an incredible experience at the Anavilhanas Lodge.
